Choose a chart for the question
Different questions require different comparisons. A trend needs a clear time axis; a ranking needs a consistent baseline; a distribution needs to show variation within the group. We choose chart types around those tasks and check whether the audience can interpret them without a lengthy explanation.
Give every measure its context
A total is difficult to interpret without knowing its period, unit and reference point. Reporting layouts should make those details visible and explain any important exclusions. We review titles, legends, axis scales, number formatting and annotations so the visual tells the same story as the underlying calculation.
- Clear labels, units and reporting periods
- Consistent scales and comparison groups
- Purposeful color and readable contrast
- Visible definitions and meaningful annotations
Make the page easier to navigate
A dashboard should have a deliberate reading order and a manageable number of views. Filters should describe what they change, and detail views should preserve enough context for users to understand where they are. We review the experience with representative tasks rather than evaluate a dashboard only as a screenshot.
Create reusable reporting conventions
The engagement can cover a single Tableau workbook or a set of recurring reports. Deliverables may include revised layouts, chart recommendations and a lightweight reporting style guide. Agreed conventions for dates, currencies, status colors and metric labels make later reporting work more consistent. The final design is checked against the intended screen sizes and the practical needs of its audience.
Common questions
Can you review visual design without changing the data platform?
Yes. A scoped review can focus on chart choice, labels, layout and interaction. If we find a calculation or data issue that affects interpretation, we record it for the responsible team.
Does visual design include accessibility?
We consider readable text, contrast, alternatives to color-only meaning and clear interaction labels. Any formal accessibility requirements and the intended delivery platform should be agreed during scoping.
